Meet Sebastian, Isuria’s first Commercial Trainee
A two-year route into trading
Isuria has welcomed Sebastian Mowbray as the first participant in its new Commercial Trainee Programme, a two-year scheme of eight placements across Isuria and the wider JSR Group, designed to lead to a career in trading.
Sebastian joined in July after completing his college studies in Economics, Business and Spanish. His interest in business started early. After spotting demand among his peers, he set up his own clothing brand, Avria, offering access to designer clothing. His interest in languages, and how they connect to economics and international trade, made a programme built around global commodity markets a natural fit.
The programme reflects the breadth of the JSR Group. Sebastian will spend time in commodity trading, customs clearance and freight forwarding, haulage, manufacturing, finance and contract administration, as well as farming, feed milling and speciality feed ingredients. He will also work with the property, IT, marketing and technical and nutritional support teams, and spend time with the Group’s leisure business, Wold Escapes.
Ben Rymer, Joint Managing Director of Isuria, said:
“One of the strengths of our Group is the number of businesses and industries we operate in. Sebastian will gain experience right across the supply chain, from farming and manufacturing through to shipping, logistics and trading. We believe that breadth of experience will give him a real advantage as he develops his trading career.”
Learning the ropes in customs and freight forwarding
Sebastian has completed the first of his eight rotations with Isuria’s Customs Clearance and Freight Forwarding team. He completed British International Freight Association (BIFA) training covering Incoterms, shipping conditions and international trade regulations, then put it into practice by helping to clear more than 300 import and export consignments for Isuria’s customers.
Reflecting on the placement, Sebastian said: “When handling exports, you have to know your customers and understand their expectations. Relationships and understanding are key.”
What’s next
Sebastian has now started his second rotation, based at JSR Farms. He will begin in the JSR Ecology team, learning about their work and helping to sell Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG) units and ecology services, including surveys and consultancy to support planning permission.
He will then move into the arable team, where he will gain an understanding of the complexity of how crops are grown and stored before they move through the supply chain.
The programme is designed to prepare Sebastian for a career as a trader at Isuria, and we look forward to following his progress over the next two years.
